L'AGORA, a student body, invited Jean-Claude TRICHET on Tuesday 8 November to participate in a conference entitled “The euro and the euro zone: lessons to learn from the crisis for the present and the future”.
Former director of the French public treasury, Governor of the Banque de France and President of the European Central Bank (ECB), Jean-Claude Trichet is one of the planet’s most influential bankers.
In 2007, as President of the ECB, he faced the sub-prime mortgage crisis with significant lucidity and clairvoyance. He ended his mandate at the ECB in 2011 against the backdrop of the sovereign debt crisis.
When the Brexit vote was announced, Trichet came out in favour of making Europe more dynamic and stronger. The referendum outcome and the rise of European nationalism are undermining Europe as a construct and its values. We need to reflect on the future of the European Union. What is the best response to Euroscepticism? What impact will Brexit have on our economies? What are the future prospects for the euro? Does the European banking system need an overhaul?
It is in this difficult economic and political climate that Jean-Claude Trichet presented his analysis on the theme “The euro and the euro zone: lessons to learn from the crisis for the present and the future”.
