Virginie Mutie, César Clary and Jean-Baptiste Piette (Master 2005) met in the lecture halls of EDHEC. 10 years after they left campus, these three friends have set about creating fun educational applications. Virginie tells us the tale of Crocolin...
EDHEC Alumni: Can you explain briefly how Crocolin came about?
Virginie Muti: Crocolin is a fun educational iPad application for children. It contains stories that are narrated, illustrated and animated, telling the tale of a small crocodile and his travels around the world. The stories include quizzes, “find out more” sections and many games. It is all available in French and English, and it’s possible to switch from one language to another within the application.
This project came about when three classmates decided to bring to life children’s stories written a few years ago by passionate teachers. We found them to be beautifully written, rich and absorbing.
So we came up with the idea to use them to create an interactive world of games and learning for children (games, quizzes, “find out more” sections, etc.) as part of a comprehensive product that would be fun, educational and original. It was obvious to us that the concept should be made available in a modern format for children: tablets and smartphones. As well as the application, we also offer other content on the website www.crocolin.com and on social networks (Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram).
How would you sum up this entrepreneurial adventure?
VM: The application has just been released, but we’ve been working together for nearly 18 months on this project, which is a passion of ours. We are proud to have initiated this project and to see it develop into a reality, we have benefited greatly from the people we have met, and have learned a great deal, both in terms of skills and self-learning!
Have you ever benefited from the network of EDHEC graduates?
VM: Since we left the school, the network has taken on an important role in our professional lives. Between the network of graduates, current students and our staff team, there is often someone from EDHEC involved in our networking.
What advice do you have for young entrepreneurs?
VM :Find the right associate(s), people you can get on with of course, but also who bring a certain complementarity… and take the plunge! Oscar Wilde used to say, “The only things one never regrets are one’s mistakes”.
What’s next for Crocolin?
VM: The Crocolin adventures are a veritable saga, with new stories released each month on the iPad application! The website and social networks are updated several times weekly.
We are also working on several adaptations (the iPhone version is currently being tested and should be released in the next few days, then we’ll be working on the Android version), on running our network and website and other changes to our content. This project has given us a lot of inspiration.
What are your expectations from the community of EDHEC graduates?
VM: We are always interested in receiving feedback, opinions and ideas… and a good rating on the App Store :-)
We are currently thinking about a possible fundraising campaign, which might allow us to speed up the deployment of our concept and possible adaptations.
