Patrick Fearon, Director of Corporate Coaching Consultancy Ltd was on campus recently to shed insight into financial careers.
He gave EDHEC students the benefit of his deep experience in investment banking, not only giving those attending a roadmap of what kind of positions are out there for graduates, but also digging into the detail of what the day to day existence of a trader might be like, in contrast to someone working as a relationship manager at and investment bank. He sketched the personalities who do best in various positions and the skills required.
While the presentation was lengthy and very detailed, participants found it entertaining as well as authoritative. A substantial amount of time was devoted to questions and answers and even after the lecture Mr. Fearon gave freely of his time and expertise, speaking with numerous students about prospects after graduation.
In answer to the question of hiring and how the financial community has absorbed the impact of the financial crisis Mr. Fearon was reassuring. While there is less hiring gong on today than in the bubble years, banks are hiring talented graduates.
At the conclusion of the evening students left to research companies and likely avenues to employment, aiming to bring back specific questions for Mr. Fearon's follow-on lecture early in 2010.
