Sophie Hue (EDHEC 2007) launches Labtoo, a marketplace for R&D

Labtoo is Europe’s marketplace for R&D, making scientific expertise widely available to businesses. It was set up by Sophie Hue (EDHEC Grande Ecole, 2007)

How did your business come about?

My associate Guillaume Leboucher and I have been friends since childhood. He studied biology and went on to do a Ph.D. in biochemistry in the United States. We had been working for 10 years before launching Labtoo. Two years ago we started discussing how to improve information exchanges in the world of research, which is very compartmentalised and complex. We are both convinced that the major challenges facing society (environment, health, food, etc.) will be resolved by disruptive technologies developed by researchers. So we wanted to create a tool that would facilitate and speed up such projects.
After a few months, we finally launched Labtoo, the marketplace for scientific expertise. Our ambition is to become the world’s biggest online laboratory.
This would allow anyone with a project to promote to gain access to the finest scientific minds.

What is your initial assessment of this entrepreneurial adventure? What advice do you have for young entrepreneurs?

Every morning I’m happy to go to work, proud to have undertaken a project that means a lot to me and has a positive impact on the world. I have an incredible team around me, and I think the most important thing for successful project development is to choose the right partners and put together an effective team of people who are driven and share the same values. You also need to be convinced by your own project and have resilience, as entrepreneurship is a bit like the weather in Brittany, constantly shifting between bright blue skies and downpours!

You graduated with an MSc from a GRANDE ECOLE, how does that education help you on your journey as an entrepreneur? What has your degree given you?

My education at EDHEC equipped me with all I needed to manage a business, but I learn new things every day!

What are your expectations from the EDHEC community?

We’re trying to raise funds for mid-2020 to boost our development in Europe, so we are always delighted to talk with anyone from the EDHEC alumni community with a view to gaining advice, exchanging best practices, etc.
EDHEC is already providing us with great support on a daily basis as we are part of the incubation scheme at Station F.

What’s next for your business?

A CTO will be joining us in September to take on technical developments for the platform. In the autumn we will be launching a new offer: consultancy missions by experts on highly specific scientific topics relating to health.
