I have just started my Gap Year! Do I really need to do anything?

Unfortunately… yes! Well, again, it all depends on your choices and career goals. But now that you have secured your first internship, and while you mostly need to make a great impression and learn as much as you can, you still need to dedicate some time at night or during the weekends to prepare for your next step:

  • If you want to do a summer internship at the end of your Gap Year, you should start researching the different opportunities, requirements, and deadlines. Better to spend some time now so that you can quickly apply once the applications open.
  • If you are looking for an off-cycle or long internship for January or March, remember to update your CV, follow your preferred companies’ career websites, and refer to our job bank and Weekly Opportunities email for open positions.

All Gap Year students should leverage on their current internships to continue to develop their managerial skills but also to validate their choices: Is the job what you expected? Is this the path you want to follow or do you now feel that maybe this is not right for you and therefore you should envision a change? And if so, what do you want to do now? We can help you during the Gap Year so do not hesitate to ask for a career meeting via phone or skype.

And while you are at it, use the resources provided to you by your Career Centre to improve your application package and interviewing skills (see related article).
