Entrust your belongings for protection to Marc Dumont (MBA 2013), creator of Cubéo
EDHEC Alumni : EDHEC Alumni: Can you explain in a few words how Cubéo came about?
Marc Dumont : I got the idea from a presentation showing somebody during the latest floods in Thailand who had protected his car by putting it in a “giant bin liner”! So I came up with the idea to create something much more suitable and easy to implement as a way of protecting one’s belongings, not only in case of flooding but against external threats in general. I founded the company in late December 2013 by teaming up with my brother.
EA : One year after the launch of the company, how would you assess this entrepreneurial adventure?
MD : The company is about to celebrate its 1st birthday, which is highly motivating as you have to be everywhere at once. We needed to draw up a patent, do the engineering work, create a product range, find suppliers, develop our prototypes and, now, look after sales.
EA : Have you ever benefited from the network of EDHEC graduates?
MD : Not yet, but now that we are beginning to market our products, I think we might look to the alumni to find the right contacts in our different target markets.
EA : What advice do you have for young entrepreneurs?
MD : Manage your time: the schedule for a project depends on many other contributors who have more than your project to think about. As a result, you often underestimate completion times. Without necessarily causing problems as such, jobs get delayed, which can have a significant impact on the financial aspect of a project.
EA : What’s next for Cubéo?
MD : Industrialisation & mass production, marketing and retailing.
EA : Do you have expectations from the community of EDHEC graduates?
I am currently supported by EDHEC Young Entrepreneurs as well as a network of former students who also set up their own company and with whom I am in regular contact.
