“The keys to authority or how to strengthen your legitimacy as a manager” by Sylvie Deffayet, professor at EDHEC

What resources are available for asserting authority in business organizations today?
Which situations are liable to strengthen or weaken managerial authority?
Is it the only way to motivate a team?
Is generation Y ‘manageable’?

How can we make management a more attractive and sustainable option?
After years of considerable academic output on ‘leadership’, why talk about authority today? Because previous research output has led to a partial and misleading conclusion that only the manager is responsible for how a managerial relationship works. In other words, if the team lacks enthusiasm or if a member of staff does not toe the line then it’s down to the leadership, in other words the problem lies with the manager!
The book by Sylvie Deffayet, Management Professor at EDHEC Business School, which will be in the bookshops on 3 June 2010, contradicts this idea by offering keys to a wider reading of the implementation of managerial authority that takes today’s challenges into consideration. It develops an original approach to power relations, showing that each player in the equation (manager, staff and company) is in part responsible, and providing effective answers for each of them.

About the author:
Sylvie Deffayet Davrout is a graduate from the school of practicing psychologists and has a DEA in Sociology and a PhD in Management Science. She teaches management at EDHEC Business School where she holds the “Leadership and Managerial Competencies” chair. Her work focuses on the personal development of managers and new management teaching methods.
