Having grown up in a country where access to education and opportunities are unequal

EDHEC RESSOURCES

07.26.2022

My name is Kirstin Hertel. I was born and grew up in South Africa. I completed my studies as a certified accountant in South Africa with one of the Big 4 auditing firms in Johannesburg.

After holding several positions in finance in manufacturing and retailing in Africa, Europe, Asia and North America, I signed up for the Executive MBA programme and have been actively involved over the last 7 years, including 3 on the EDHEC Alumni Board of Trustees.

So why did I decide to become an EDHEC Resource?

Having grown up in a country where access to education and opportunities are unequal, I am highly aware of the importance of education and the doors that can open up for you, the way education improves the quality of life for families, whole communities, women in particular.

Gaining access to a course like those on offer at EDHEC is not easy. And so, as well as contributing financially to the grant scheme, I also take part in the admission jury panels, where future alumni are given a short practical case to work on in groups, allowing diverse profiles to show their potential. I have always found discussions with these future generations to be fascinating and enriching. I have also offered support to students at the end of their studies as they look for their first job.

But learning is a lifelong pursuit, and I make the most of the various social events, discussions, webinars, Alumni Summer Sessions etc. made available on the EDHEC Alumni website. These are privileged moments away from the daily rat race where you can meet interesting people and discover a wide range of topics.

I give up some of my time and money, but I get back so much more!
