With the graduate job market becoming increasingly more competitive as a result of the financial and economic crisis, skimming through the Vault Guide may no longer be enough to land a job in the financial services industry.
The transition from business school to the job market now requires thorough technical preparation, inside-out knowledge of prospective employers, and a solid understanding of the recruiting procedures, not to mention a few contacts. All, perhaps, easier said than done.
The EDHEC Finance Club, a professional student association recently founded by three Financial Economics students, aims to help fellow classmates to bridge the gap. By acting as an intermediary between the student body and the financial industry, the Finance Club will give EDHEC students the opportunity to attend networking events, company presentations, skill-building workshops and business games.
This initiative complements the collective efforts of EDHEC Business School to educate well-rounded, market-oriented professionals, such as the Financial Economics Events, the Finance Career Days, and the TI&CD, a talent identification and career development programme unique in Europe. The Finance Club will also operate in close contact with EDHEC's faculty in Finance and will benefit from the international reputation of the research done by EDHEC- Risk Institute.
The activities of the Finance Club were officially kicked off on 10 April, with the organisation of four workshops—Corporate Finance, Financial Markets, Asset Management and Internships for International Students in France —during which final-year students with relevant work experience shared their insights into their internships and provided tips and hints on how to deal with the recruiting process.
Later that evening, selected students attended a networking cocktail with former M&A banker and current Julius Baër vice-president, Laurent Natta (EDHEC MSc in Finance, 2005) and other EDHEC Alumni. Mr Natta, on top of providing students with precious career tips, shared detailed insights into the current trends in M&A and Wealth Management across Europe.
