• Definition of product, market, target
Shashin is an online photo gallery : www.shashingallery.com
We offer affordable photo prints by talented, young or experienced photographers not yet in the public eye.
The aim is to promote their work to a wider audience who are looking for good photos, and to help the artists to raise their profile, notably by organising joint exhibitions in and around Paris.
The photos are generally from a larger portfolio and the artist has given us permission to increase the number of prints. Photos may be sold alone, framed, mounted simply, with perspex or with a shadow box frame. Prices range from €65 to €600.
• Staff: 3 founder associates including 1 Edhec alumnus
• Capital raised or to be raised: SAS with a capital of 20,000 euros
• Project originality:
The founders are all art and photography enthusiasts, who started out in very different areas: marketing, human resources, consulting and finance. The web gallery’s editorial policy is open and curious, but the main focus is on atmosphere, poetry, aesthetic settings, situations and visual arrangements. We also promote certain themes such as Asian photography (“shashin” means photography in Japanese).
We work in partnership with art4rent, a young company created by Edhec alumni, to rent out our photos to companies.
• Growth prospects: Today’s fine art photography market is monopolised by vintage or very contemporary photos, sold at extremely high prices. However, we have identified a wider audience made up of future collectors and lovers of beautiful pictures who would like to discover young artists and at the same time acquire photos that are less expensive than traditional gallery prices for themselves or for someone close to them.
III/ What do you expect from the Edhec network?
We would just like other Edhec alumni to discover the work of our first photographers, and to choose from among the photos currently on offer, before we extend our photo gallery at the beginning of 2011.
Edhec alumni can also subscribe to the newsletter for our first private viewing (opening in Paris soon).
