E-learning: a virtual campus

Driven by the latest EdTech (Education Technologies) innovations, remote learning is experiencing a revolution. We have come a long way since correspondence courses! Nowadays every effort is made to ensure that learners enjoy an experience that is as rich and sociable as if they were attending classes in person. This is the advent of the “virtual campus”: interactive classes, group exercises, etc. Discover how a 100% digital campus operates.

What's a virtual campus?

A virtual campus is made available online through the user’s dedicated account. It is a digital ecosystem that combines all of the services and resources needed to complete a remote learning course. Virtual classrooms are one of its cornerstones: the interactive classes that take place here are specifically designed to reproduce the experience of a real classroom.

The instructor answers questions using a direct online chat system and can ask participants to provide responses and carry out group activities during the class. This enables learners to reinforce their knowledge and get immediate feedback on how well they have understood the content.

"In terms of technology, the primary objective of online courses is interactivity. This is much more than simply conducting a class by video: e-learning tools must be designed in a way that facilitates exchanges between participants and the teacher, but also between the participants themselves." Roland Fines, Chief Technology Officer, EDHEC Online.

To develop the content of classes, the virtual campus also offers access to various resources: additional lectures, videos or podcasts as well as tests so that participants can measure their progress as the course unfolds.

Humans at the heart of the 100% digital campus

Beyond its academic function, a campus is also a meeting place and the scene of much collaboration. In order to develop this social dimension in a digital version, the virtual campus is designed to facilitate exchanges between learners. Collaborative tools allow them to form working groups, giving them the opportunity to share their thoughts and develop their remote project management skills.

”As soon as the academic year begins, all participants in our remote learning programmes join groups of 5 or 6 learners. They use our platform to communicate and collaborate: this is an enriching experience as it gives them the chance to meet professionals from highly varied sectors and benefit from their shared knowledge and perspectives – just like a traditional campus.” Roland Fines

With discussion tools integrated into the virtual campus, everyone can develop their professional network, communicate with the team of teaching staff and benefit from individual support. In the case of EDHEC Business School’s online courses, each class is assigned mentors to serve as dedicated contacts who provide additional information about the subjects being tackled in class as well as other academic resources.

The virtual campus also provides a space for personal and professional development: participants benefit from personalised career support from a coach via videoconference systems – either one-on-one or as part of group sessions. This ensures a profoundly human and tailored digital experience – e-learning that is “up close and personal”.
