PROFESSIONAL SERVICESFORWARD THINKING

Self-motivated with a head for business? Then help lead BT into the future.

If you join the Professional Services Graduate Programme you'll be helping us shape the future of the company. You could either be in a rotational role, doing four different assignments for six months at a time, or in a fixed role working on lots of different projects. Either way, your experience will be hugely varied - you could be working off-site with a client, or on a business-improvement initiative. You'll also attend three residential courses, and develop essential personal and management skills to set you up for a successful career in professional services.

ROLES YOU COULD EXPERIENCE INCLUDE:

Project Management: working alongside other project managers, you could find yourself helping to develop contracts for our major corporate suppliers, or bringing new products and services to market. You'll need strong leadership skills and the ability to balance the competing demands of time, cost, quality and customer satisfaction.

Business Improvement: the Business Improvement team has a broad array of skills and has the responsibility for a wide range of functions. Its aim is to significantly improve all the different BT functions we support, and make sure the sales teams are well positioned to win business. In this role, you'll be helping to implement changes across all parts of our business. You'll develop a good grasp of technology, a strong problem-solving ability and an eye for detail to help us improve the way we work.

Business Consultancy: our consulting teams combine broad business experience with an understanding of how organisations work and how to change them - in terms of technology, processes and people. Working in customer-facing roles, usually as part of a programme, project or bid team, your role will be to help our corporate customers manage strategic business change. Working alongside senior consultants, and in close partnership with the customer, you could be redesigning their business processes, solving any technology issues that may be slowing down their business growth, or finding ways for them to change and improve the way they work. You'll need to be confident and adaptable, with excellent communication and influencing skills.

ICT & RESEARCH

STAYING AHEADICT

Want to push boundaries to deliver the most advanced and innovative solutions around? Then this could be the area for you.

Our ICT teams are some of the best in the world, and you'll need a logical and creative mind to join them. A technical degree would be ideal, but we look at graduates with other qualifications too.

From day one you'll work on cutting-edge projects like the 21st Century Network - the most ambitious transformation programme in the telecommunications industry today - broadband applications, mobility and network security. You'll get the chance to turn your own innovative ideas into reality. Some of our roles are also rotational, which means you'll work in several different areas during your 2-year programme.

As well as valuable real-life experience, you'll get all the technical training you need to be an expert in your specific field. This could include training in agile software development through SCRUM, Cisco, ITIL and Communication Networks training.

ROLES YOU COULD EXPERIENCE IN ICT INCLUDE:

Technology Design and Consultancy: You'll be providing tailored solutions for our customers - including implementing new products, services and systems for them. You'll need to have strong technical aptitude and skills, and be happy providing key customers with consultancy services and support.

Software and Platform Engineering: you'll be working at the cutting edge of IT and communication systems. So you'll need to be technically astute, and excited by the challenge of achieving the seemingly impossible. You'll be involved in all aspects of the system development cycle, from application development and software validation, to network application design and programming.

IT Technical Operations: you'll gain experience and training at the heart of our IT infrastructure, looking after the systems that help BT lead the field in a software-driven world. You'll also be looking after the processes on which our own business depends, making sure that infrastructure and internal systems are always ready for service.

Network Engineering and Management: combining engineering and project management skills, you'll oversee the design, planning, building, maintenance and operation of networks - both ours and those of other companies. You'll need to be good at delivering results on time and on budget.

RESEARCH

Join our research team and you could be working in areas such as multimedia systems, internet technologies, artificial intelligence, programmable networks and information security. What's more, you'll have a front seat view as BT turns your research into the consumer products of tomorrow.

As well as having the opportunity to become .NET - or Java-certified, if you work in our research labs you'll be encouraged to undertake the BT MSc in Telecommunications Engineering. This course, offered by University of London, includes a broad range of modules covering software engineering, internet and broadband networks, multimedia applications, mobile communications, security, and telecomms business.

Researchers wishing to study for a PhD are also actively supported. Currently, a number of our researchers are studying for part-time PhDs with University of Lancaster, or for part-time EngD qualifications with UCL. The research topics for both the PhDs and EngDs are in fields related to the students' BT research.

OUR RESEARCH CENTRES SPECIALISE IN:

IT: you could be researching emerging web technologies, or working on projects related to semantic technologies and knowledge management.

Pervasive ICT: you'll be researching and designing the next generation of network systems and infrastructure, often working as the technical lead in cross-functional research projects.

Security: working largely with .NET and C# technologies, you'll be designing ever more robust security infrastructure for our customers.

Broadband Applications: from researching the cutting edge of internet multimedia to working out how crowd analysis could help keep congestion down on train platforms, you'll be working on an exciting range of projects.

Networks: with projects range from changing the internet architecture to optimising BT's networks, you'll be involved in key research areas such as Quality of Service, Routing, Resilience, Reliability, Optimisation and Control.
