EDHEC RESSOURCES

11.25.2022

Alexander Delcommune (Master of Science 2015). Being an EDHEC Resource has enabled me to get closely involved in the activities of alumni from EDHEC, whether in Brussels or Central Europe (Budapest), and pass on certain requests, for example students looking for internships at oil firm MOL Group or at UPS.

I was also able to rely on EDHEC alumni to spread the word about the publication of my first book, a techno-thriller entitled Nabucco, and a novella that was included in an EDHEC Alumni newsletter, alongside two other publications by alumni in late 2020.

The aim is to offer support and help to alumni, and play an active part in activities and networking.

Less than two years later, my idea to produce a strategy manual that would be accessible and applicable to all, drawing inspiration from the ideas of the Florentine diplomat and strategist Machiavelli, has become a reality.

I have written and published a second book, drawing on the main lessons in The Art of War and The Prince, and applying them to dozens of different situations, kinds of “case studies” in various areas (economics, monetary policy, finance, military strategy, electoral strategy and geopolitics & energy, among others).

This is the first book written in French to address these issues since the one by British journalist Tim Phillips (published in 2009 and since translated), which boiled these lessons down to 110 pieces of advice.

I sketch out 10 cardinal principles, applied to real situations in modern life.

Machiavel, principes stratégiques dérivés, 10 leçons pour conserver le pouvoir is a book on managerial and geopolitical strategy that summarises the principles contained in the writings of Florentine strategist and diplomat Machiavelli in The Art of War and The Prince, and applies them to dozens of different situations in the 20th and 21st centuries in industry, economics, finance and international politics. It is a kind of manual offering guidance on geopolitics and management with a view to maintaining power in an organisation. Dozens of situations are scrutinised with a fine-toothed comb and the decisions made are analysed in areas as diverse as monetary policy (ECB) to save the Eurozone, military strategy (Operation Serval in the Sahel region), the decisions that led to the bankruptcy of Fortis between 2007 and 2009, those taken by the staff of President George W. Bush in the run-up to his re-election in 2004, those taken by Donald Trump’s team to save his real estate firm in the mid-90s, not to mention the decisions and actions taken by the Kennedy administration during the Cuban missile crisis. Dozens of situations and decisions are analysed by drawing on the principles of Machiavelli.
