'The Dual-Career Mojo that Makes Couples Thrive' by Pr. Valcour
In a new Harvard Business Review article entitled ‘The Dual-Career Mojo That Makes Couples Thrive’, professor Monique Valcour discusses issues faced by couples when it comes to careers.
As stated by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg "the most important career choice you'll make is who you marry." For professor Valcour, this career advice makes good sense. She recommends that dual-career couples discuss their career objectives at a very early stage, even before getting married, and that they keep lines of communication open in order to continue harmonising their dual career goals.
Indeed, couples must be on the same page regarding their shared life goals and their career plans in order to maintain equilibrium. They must not only have shared visions and values, but also develop a mutual interest and appreciation for each others’ work lives and be mutually supportive.
Professor Valcour outlines that both partners must be open-minded and flexible enough to understand change and failure. Indeed, modern careers don't typically follow a predictable path; the road is ever-changing.
